A couple of new projects

Sep

Literally haven’t unpacked the gear from the gig on saturday, bu tthere’s a couple of forthcoming temp0rary projects worth talking about. Firstly, there’s a version of Brightmorning on the Zero Stare Media free compilation released this Friday (23/9/11) along with a lot of other exciting music. Secondly, temp0rary will be doing a remix of Reverse Engineer My Heart for Goteki – no release date on that one yet but we’ll let you know.

Post-gig ponderings

Thorougly enjoyed the most recent performance organised by the SPEC crew on Saturday performing as part of the PIAS fundraising event. Joined onstage by the ever-awesome Ben McLees on guitar (after exactly zero rehearsals since we played together back in February 2010) and featuring a new expanded 2-computer live rig running both music and visuals, and featuring some intentionally temperamental hand-built equipment, the potential for things to go wrong was likely at best.

Despite this, I’m fairly confident we knocked it out of the park with the best temp0rary performance to date. It helped that Galen and Hailstrom played great sets before us as it really raised the bar for me. Totally got into the songs and stretched them into some interesting new shapes, adding live synths and noises and more vocals than before, narrowing the gap between previous temp0rary performances and old Chaos Engine shows. Couldn’t be happier. The day was rounded off with some great shows from Woosey, Brown Torpedo and Longstone too – I’m lucky to live here.

So yet again Ben and I pledged not to leave it so long until the next show or recording… only I think we mean it this time…

Quick gig post

Hi folks – after some confusion i can now confirm that the next chance to see temp0rary will be at The Frog & Fiddle on Saturday 17th September as a fundraiser for the indie labels hit by the PIAS warehouse fire. You should totally come along. I might well put up some sneak recordings of the rehearsals which are sounding VERY LOUD at present…

Curtain Call

Aug

On Saturday, I got to do a temp0rary performance in The Roundhouse in Camden, which was a bit of a treat. Just before 7, me and about a dozen other media performers installed our kit inside Ron Arad’s Curtain Call installation. Turned out I was the only one who’d brought decent speakers… ;)

For almost 3 hours I performed a set of temp0rary tracks on a dual-rig I’d built – the music was being improvised out of one machine whilst the second took the music & turned it into projected visuals. This shared space with loads of other projections in a kind of crazy A/V jam session which could be seen from inside and out of the curtain. Amazing fun. There are some videos below that don’t really do justice to either the performance or the installation – if you can, pop down and have a look at the installation before the end of August.

Next up will probably be a performance at SPEC, but I’m still waiting for confirmation – if that’s not on, I’ll be doing something else in September since I’m stoked about performing this stuff live and don’t want to sit on my hands any more! Right, on with the TV show!:

Forthcoming gigs & stuff

Been a long time since I updated this – oops. Lots going on, the vast majority of which will feed nicely into temp0rary stuff, so that’s good. Just finished work on a new Xykogen album which was, frankly, a game-changing experience.

I’ve been asked to do a gig at the wonderful SPEC on 1st September… I think. I’d had a couple of beers, so I’ll need to get that confirmed, but if it’s a go, then I’m very excited. I’m also trying to squeeze in something before that which is a little different in an insanely cool venue. Half a plan for that to be a temp0rary gig of sorts too.

I completed 2 tracks for compilatiions recently, one is out already on a compilation for Sendai Japan Tsunami Relief – it’s by far the best thing I’ve done to date with temp0rary, so pick it up if you can. The other track is for a copmilation for Zero State who I’m hoping to be more involved with in the coming months.

I also keep forgetting that there’s a free double-album of temp0rary stuff for download which I completed during one of those snowed-in days, so if you’re new to this, that’s a good place to jump on. I’ll be putting more music up as & when it seems like a good idea. no plans to sell any of this, unless it’s for a good cause.

temp0rary rehearsal sneak peek

I’ve decided not to keep this one secret… here’s one of the tracks from the rehearsals for my gig in just under 2 weeks time:

temp0rary – regime change [14349]

Can’t guarantee it’ll sound anything like that live, mind you…

This is all enormous fun – I’m tinkering with being able to add live keyboards, guitars, electronic drums, stylophone, mobile phones, other laptops, vocals and anything that can be captured with a mic, and being able to sample loops on the fly and add them to the music. I’m planning some more weird little gigs, and I want to upset the apple-cart by trundling up to open mic nights with a suitcase full of kit, but being able to jam along with everyone. After reducing the concept of recorded music to nought, I want to start making the audience part of the band and blurring that boundary too. Oops, careful – this could end up being art…

Welcome

Hey there. Took a long time coming but finally we have the makings of the temp0rary website. I’m hoping to get some stuff up on here as I prepare for my gig with Xykogen on 17th February, but real life has a habit of intruding on the best laid plans. Don’t watch this space, unless you really have nothing better to do… Go explore, tell me what’s broken, what you like and why I’m doing this, because I’m still not too sure…
