Spamblasts 2003 – 1998

Spamblasts were our irregular newsletters and updates sent to people on our mailing list. Here they are in all their unedited glory…

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 11/06/03

— INTRODUCTION —

Can it be? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it can and it is. Exactly 6
months to the day, and here’s another Chaos Engine Spamblast. Good
Lord, it’s half-past-2003 already…

— WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN? —

Those of you with particularly good memories will recall that at the
end of 2002 we announced our Christmas Extravaganza would be the last
Chaos Engine gig for ‘Quite Some Time’. We needed a break, dear
reader.
But some particularly juicy offers have tempted us out of
retirement…

— NOW WHAT ARE YOU UP TO? —

The full story can be found at the hastily-updated
www.chaosengine.com,
but in a nutshell, we will be doing the following rather sexy dates:

July 3rd – Perth, Australia
July 11th – Melbourne, Australia
July 12th – Sydney Australia
All dates as main support to Sheep On Drugs

There will be a one-off UK warm-up date on 27th June at Cracker’s,
Gloucester.

October 31 – Whitby Gothic Weekend 10th Anniversary

Please note, we have no plans nor intention to do any further gis
this
year (large bags of cash notwithstanding; tell me you’d do any
different and I’ll call you a sayer of untruths) and there defintely
won’t be a UK tour for The Chaos Engine in 2003.

— AND THEN? ANDTHENANDTHENANDTHEN? —

If you want to catch up with Chaos-flavoured mayhem before that, you
could do worse than come to this little shindig, co-organised and
DJ’d
by Yours Truly:

Engine news and manoeuvres. Apologies for our uncharacteristically

Rumours may have already reached your ears that The Chaos engine will

— INTRODUCTION —

Good Evening to all you spam-hungry consumers of Chaos, and welcome to another meaty product of more than one country to put a smile on your face as we stride into…summer?

— CHEESE ROLLING WEEKENDER 2001 —

It’s that May Madness once more… just to scotch some rumours, our Cheese Rolling gig IS STILL ON AND NOT AT ALL CANCELLED! – Two out of three of our events survived the dreaded foot & mouth disease, and only the actual Cheeseroll itself is in jeopardy (although I’m working on this…) Therefore your schedule for the Bank Holiday Weekend looks a bit like this:-

Saturday 26th May

Chaotic Cheeserolling Weekender – act one

The Guildhall, Gloucester

The Chaos Engine with Swarf, D.U.S.T. Elysium, Skinflowers and Arkam Asylum

Tickets £5 advance, £6 on the door – info: 01452 505089

Sunday 27th May

Chaotic Cheeserolling Weekender – act two

Paint balling @ Paint ball Raiders, Gloucester

From 1pm onwards – Tel 01452 306117

Cost: £10 game fee (includes hire of gun, mask, goggles [ooh, how cyb3r!] and boiler suit)

Ammo: £5 for 50 shots, £8 for 100

YES, this is open to EVERYONE – but to be sure of a place, you’ll need to send the game fee bit to us by the 14th May – e-mail lee@wasp-factory.com for info – although you can turn up on the day, space permitting.

Monday 29th May

Chaotic Cheeserolling Weekender – act three

Foot and mouth or no, we WILL find something and we WILL roll down it after fermented curd… more info to follow soon!

— CHAOS ENGINE AT EUROROCK 2001! —

Yes, the rumours are true! Not only are Chaos Engine confirmed to play at EuroRock 2001 in Neerpelt, Belgium, but Wasp Factory Recordings has it’s own STAGE! On Friday August 2001, you’ll be able to see ALL the Wasp Factory bands – Chaos Engine, D.U.S.T., Swarf, Skinflowers, Arkam Asylum, Tarantella Serpentine & Exitboy, AND Decoded Feedback all in one place from noon til midnight!

This coupled with other all-star appearances from bands too numerous to mention makes it a must-see event, so get your passport in order, or check out their website at www.eurorock.be to see what you’ll be missing out on!

[and a big public hug to Thomas who helped us with this one…:]

— FINAL LIVE DATES WITH KELLY —

As reported previously, The Chaos Engine’s live line-up will be changing significantly over the next few months, as our Bass-Babe Kelly departs for pastures new and we expand the band to deal with the new material in the pipeline. Details are top-secret at the moment, but here’s a brief round-up of all the gigs left with the existing line-up:-

10/05/01 – Trillians, Newcastle

13/05/01 – JB’s, Dudley

18/05/01 – The Twist, Colchester

26/05/01 – The Guildhall, Gloucester

Once again, apologies to all for the cancellation of the Portsmouth gig due to something very confusing and promoter-related that *still* hasn’t been made clear to us… we will return with the new line-up before the year is out, and we plan to tour again throughout September & October.

— VOTE CHAOS! —

As if once wasn’t enough – if you live in Cheltenham (specifically the centre of town / St Paul’s constituency), you can vote for Lee H in the local elections on Thursday, June 7th. As usual, we’ll be doing our spot of rabble-rousing to bring to light the issues surrounding young and alternative lifestyles in small-town England, specifically focusing on the re-opening of The Axiom, or an alternative arts centre in Cheltenham.

So far we’ve already had some good coverage – look out for a photo-feature in the Independent on Sunday this weekend on The Chaos Party – but we really want to capture the hearts and minds of the local press.

We’d like to invite you ALL along to the Vote Chaos Rally, which is being held in Cheltenham Town Centre on SATURDAY MAY 19th at 1.30PM – we’re urging you all to dress as flamboyantly as possible and bring any device capable of making a loud noise! The local press have already promised to send us a photographer or tow, so if you fancy a slice of anarchic fame, don your best togs and join the mayhem!

For more info, visit the website www.votechaos.org or mail info@votechaos.org

— ESCAPE FEROCITY UNDER WAY —

Everything’s going to plan on the recording of our third full-length album… although it looks like it’s more likely to see a release in September, partly due to the other madness going on and partly due to the offer of an ex-Jesus Jones collaborator stepping in to help out with the final mixes which we thought too good to turn down…

You can catch sneak previews of the direction it’s going in on our own ‘Working With Children & Animals’ compilation which you an order from www.wasp-factory.com or on the forthcoming ‘Armalyte Industries – Industrial Dawn’ compilation which is due for release on 26th May – more info as it arrives…

— OUTRO —

This e-mail was brought to you under the influence of coffee and Chewits, and slowed severely by Silent Bomber on the Playstation and further plans for World Domination…muHAHAHA!

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST 8/3/01

— introduction —

Hello and welcome to a right old mixed carton of spam; a glad message, a sad message but never a bad message…

— a loss in the family —

First, foremost, and most saddening is that Kelly, foxy Bass-Thang for The Chaos Engine since Christmas 1998 will be leaving the band to pursue pastures new after our April / May tour. We’re gonna miss her massively and things won’t be the same in the band (or the tour van!) without her, but the Chaos must go on! So come along to our last gigs as a three-piece and give the lass the send-off she so richly deserves. The tour in brief looks like this:

8/4/01 – The Garage, London

2/5/01 – The Bierkeller, Bristol

4/5/01 – The Horseshoe, Portsmouth

10/5/01 – Trillians, Newcastle

13/5/01 – JB’s, Dudley

18/5/01 – The Twist, Colchester

26/5/01 – The Guildhall, Gloucester

Full details of the gigs can be found at www.chaosengine.com

— chaotic Cheeserolling weekender —

This one’s living up to its name already! Aside from being Kelly’s last gig, we’ve now had the original venue closed down on us! Still, the show is to continue, but now in a bigger and better way!

ACT ONE of the Chaotic Cheeserolling weekender will take place at THE GULDHALL,

Gloucester on SATURDAY MAY 26TH with a real Wasp Factory all star line-up, support coming from Swarf, DUST, Elyzium, Skinflowers *and* Arkam Asylum, with

your resident DJ E23 filling the teeny gaps between bands! Kick-off is 8pm sharp with music until 12.30am, tickets are £5 from the box office 01452 505086

ACT TWO is a 2-pronged affair, with the afternoon of Sunday May 27th being taken up with pro-celebrity paintballing and the evening succumbing to the temptation that is Goth karaoke! Full details to be announced shortly…

ACT THREE is the inimitable cheese roll itself on MONDAY MAY 27th… last year

saw entries from Arkam Asylum, Dr A, Eris and my foolhardy self risk life and limb for a lump of crud-encrusted fermented curd…and end up with not a little notoriety on Regional television! You can see an overview of the total mayhem at http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/scripts/edarchdisplay.asp?section=Local+news&ID=10299&source=E&s=archives&area=News&opensect= (all one line) – a coach will be running from Cheltenham to Cooper’s Hill, again, more details to follow soon.

— new Chaos Engine tracks —

It’s not all cheese round here – we are actually working too! Work on our third album, ‘Escape Ferocity’ is continuing at an accelerating rate – there are 2 sneak preview instrumentals at www.mp3.com/chaosengine for you to have a listen to, if you’re that way inclined and pining for Napster. The first is provisionally titled LT-MT and is currently trying to sound like Fear Factory gone trance-acoustic (?), and the second is Custom-Built For Hate which comes on like a really annoyed Wolfsheim after too much coffee.

Both previews will appear on www.mp3.com/chaosengine – they SHOULD be there

now, but it seems like MP3.com is a bit bogged down since Napster took another beating (oh don’t get me started on THAT one!)

We’re also looking at having a track finished for an Armalyte Industries compilation which is due out in May – more info as soon as we have it!

— vote chaos! —

We did it last year and we’re doing it again this year – yes, once more, you can VOTE CHAOS in the local elections! As part of the Government’s new campaign to encourage you to vote, we’re encouraging you to constructively spoil your ballot-paper by voting for Chaos! Our manifesto at www.votechaos.org for you to have a look at, but in a nutshell we’re the party for people who think all politicians are the same. If there’s one thing we can confidently claim to be, it’s different!

The first thing you have to do right now is register to vote (and spoil!) in the elections – this is dead-easy to do now, just call 08456 062 062 and the new efficient electoral offices will send you all the info you need. Once registered, you can even stand as a candidate for The Chaos Party!

In order to run for The Chaos Party you must be over 21, be able to get your nomination paper signed by 10 people in your local constituency (so encourage everyone you know to register!) and be prepared to stand up in public and make a noise about the fact that Government policies don’t provide for the young people as much as they should.

If you want to spread Political Chaos in your town, drop us a line at enquiries@votechaos.org and we’ll tell you what to do! I’ll even provide a prize for the person who gets the most votes!! (actually I’m not sure that’s legal…;¬)

— chaosengine.com —

The continually coming-soon update to www.chaosengine.com is coming soon… no really! You can tell we’re serious coz we’re starting to build lots of behind the scenes bits – for instance, you can now have a play on our new message-board which is at http://members3.boardhost.com/chaosengine/ – come and tell us what you think of the show so far!

And while we’re on the subject, www.wasp-factory.com has had a whole bunch of work done to it recently, including it’s ownm separate mailing list & message board, more info on all the Wasp Factory artists and a handful of MP3s for your aural pleasure.

— noisemonger.com —

One for you to have a look at during those quiet office hours – www.noisemonger.com is a great site that collects together reviews, commentary on music and prose, all of which is exquisitely written and beautifully presented. There’s a top review of our ‘Children & Animals’ CD launch which really does do the ensuing madness the justice it deserves, an excellent article on MP3s and some fantastic ramblings by other characters beyond categorisation – just go look, okay?!

— Chaos Engine dates for 2001 – a Disgrace Oddyssey tour —

It seems like we’ve been away from the spit & sawdust of the live circuit for an eternity – and i guess in the hectic world of The Chaos Engine, 4 months without gigs is a long time! However, we’re springing back into the fray with a vengeance – of special note is our gig with the mighty Project Pitchfork on the 8th April and our 2nd Annual Chaotic Cheeserolling weekender – stay tuned for full details including a goth karaoke and life-threatening cheese-chasing antics… you’ll notice this date is at the END of our tour!

Also, we don’t want to give TOO much away, but this is the last time you’ll see The Chaos Engine in its current incarnation…

— Recording of new album underway —

Parental Advisory studios are positively humming with activity at the moment; as well as having hosted various debauched recording sessions with both Wasp Factory artists Arkham Asylum and Tarantella Serpentine for their debut releases, overseeing the mixing of the new Skinflowers album and the latest tranche of ExitBoy remixes / deconstructions, the decks are now being cleared for the recording of the third Chaos Engine album, titled ‘Escape Ferocity’ current song titles include “Go Offline”, “Televampirism”, “He’s Our Lover”, “Antithesis”, “Wet / Hard”, “Naphephobia” and our entry for best song title EVER, “The Guiting Power Institute for Supreme & Unnecessary Evil”

True to our word, demos at this stage really DO sound like the genetic demon offspring of Britney Spears, VNV Nation and Atari Teenage Riot…! Keep checking the website for MP3 sneak-previews due up in about mid-February.

— Wasp Factory mailing list —

For those of you new to the program, Wasp Factory Recordings is now very much a monster in its own rights. This year we will be releasing no less than EIGHT new CDs from new and fabulous bands – all the info you could ever need on the Wasp Factory roster can be found at our newly updated website at www.wasp-factory.com – drop in for the full lowdown on the busieast indie-dustrial label in the world!

In future, we’ll be moving the Wasp Factory list to its own server, so you’ll get spam in Chaos Engine and Wasp Factory flavours separately – two meals for the price of, err, none! Who said there’s no such thing as a free lunch?!

— Outro —

This spamblast was brought to you by a crate of satsumas and a box of ginseng and was not impaired by Tenchu 2, which is a massive disappointment… at this rate we’ll have the album finished *ahead* of schedule…!

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 16/12/00

— INTRO —

Hi All, and welcome to a portion of spam with all the trimmings and a hint of cranberry sauce! I’ll keep this one relatively short and sweet as I’m sure you don’t have much time inbetween pushing your way through the consumer-zombies looking for that essential gift for an auntie you haven’t seen since last Christmas, and getting so drunk that you forget the whole experience ever happened…

— CHAOS ENGINE CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA —

The only way to end the year…For anyone who’s only just joined the programme, this year’s Chaos Engine shindig & knees-up is being held in Cheltenham at Branson’s (20 Albion Street, tel 01242 573600) this coming FRIDAY 22ND DECEMBER. Having gained something of a reputation for ourselves with last year’s six-band-plus-samba finale, we’ve got all the plans in place to make this year’s event even more Chaotic than ever!

Although pagan rituals dragged into the 21st century, festive foodstuffs, and audience participation on a Biblical level cannot be confirmed in detail, we can tell you that The Chaos Engine will be joined onstage by members of at least three other Wasp Factory bands, and that the support will come from the marvellous and accolade-winning Squid, as well as a truly inspired/insane collaboration between technoid mavericks Freudstein and the UK’s only professor of Punch & Judy! Doors open 8pm, get there early to avoid missing the freak and unique…

— END-OF-YEAR POLLS —

We’re not ones for learning from our mistakes. Vote for us. Is that REALLY such a controversial thing to say?! Enough already…

— OUTRO —

This spamblast was brought to you in spite of Christmas and the hideous blend of consumerism and religious piety it has become. Enjoy the respite from your wage-slavery, thanks for all the support you’ve given us in the first year of the new (but strangely identical) millennium, and see you for more of the same Chaos in 2001…

Lee H THE CHAOS ENGINE 16/12/00

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 10/10/00

— introduction —

Greetings, you ever-patient ingesters of Chaos, to a much needed feeding-frenzy of spam. Apologies for keeping you fans of The Chaos Engine in the dark for so long, but we’ve been MEGA-hectic with our plans for world domination. Allow us to tell you about the fruits of our honest toil…

— working with children & animals —

The first Wasp Factory compilation has been a real labour of love for us over the last few months, but the metaphorical waters have now broken and we are but a few short pushes away from giving birth to this new offspring.

The album features two brand-new Chaos Engine tracks recorded especially for the occasion, ‘Me & My Army’, which is a white-noise rush of ATR intensity with a big bouncy Britney-size chorus, and ‘Complicit’ which may or may not be the first dancefloor-friendly song ever written about Gloucester’s most notorious couple… ;¬)

The CD is due for release on SUNDAY DECEMBER 3RD to coincide with our launch party, which is being held at THE UNDERWORLD, LONDON, and features a glittering never-to-be-repeated all-star line-up, featuring the bands on the compilation in unique one-off collaborations, sure to make this an evening to be remembered. Expect to see:

Leech Woman Vs Hydra

Chaos Engine Vs Skinflowers

Goteki, Arkham Asylum and the Freudstein All-Stars

…and much ‘anything can happen’ style mayhem! Ticket details can be found on http://www.nemesis.to

The final tracklisting is still to be confirmed, but highlights aside from the new Chaos Engine tracks include the first UK release for Goteki, exclusive remixes from Leech Woman and Squid, New material from Hydra and Skinflowers, and the first recordings from Wasp Factory artists Arkham Asylum and Tarantella Serpentine, all lovingly stitched together with the twisted hands of Freudstein. And yes, we can confirm that Dr A of Goteki infamy has been working on collectible cards to go inside the CDs that have to be seen to be believed!

This gig will see the proper launch of Wasp Factory Recordings as a separate entity from The Chaos Engine as we continue to expand and assimilate all in our path. Check your mailbox for details of a separate Wasp Factory mailing list and website in the near future to keep you informed of forthcoming Wasp Factory releases by other groovy artists.

— christmas extravaganza —

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganzas are becoming the only way to end the year, with legendary collaborations and surprise guests aplenty. This year sees the (un)usual augmented Chaos Engine ensemble backed up by a full set from Squid, and a totally unique Freudstein experience, the details of which it almost PAINS us to keep secret, along with the usual mince-pie flavoured madness, stalls, club decor, full Chaos TV lighting and the mother of all finales…yet again…

This year the gig will take place on FRIDAY 22nd DECEMBER at BRANSON’S in Cheltenham. Tickets are a paltry £3 in advance.

— other gigs —

And there’s more! To get us into the swing of things, we’llbe pre-empting all this December madness with a gig or two. First on the slab is a gig supporting ANTIPRODUCT at Branson’s again on THURSDAY 30TH NOVEMBER. For those of you who haven’t come across their mutated surf-duatrial noise before, they really are an intense joy to behold, with Alex Kane being the Last Of The True Front-Men, having infamously performed onstage wearing nothing but clingfilm and sprayed his wedding-tackle green at earlier performances – expect the unexpected is an understatement of biblical proportions…!

We’ve also now confirmed a gig at the BRISTOL BIERKELLER on WEDNESDAY 1ST NOVEMBER. The gig is in conjunction with ORGIE, the alternative/industrial club, and we’ll be supported by Newport’s Acid Tongue. Doors open at 7pm and we’ll be onstage at 9pm. More details from the Box Office on 0117 926 8514. And don’t mention the gig to anyone at The Powerhouse, who tired to have me thrown out of the building for flyering the gig on Saturday night…! ;¬)

Then, due to pressing public demand, we’re planning to go out and do a full UK tour sometime after Christmas to road-test a whole new bunch of new Chaos Engine songs off our third album, provisionally titled ‘Escape Ferocity’, which is due out slap-bang in the middle of 2001, exhaustion notwithstanding…

— web fun & games —

As promised, the redesign to http://www.chaosengine.com is still trundling on, but you can brace yourself for the big launch by having a play at our new Yahoo Club at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/chaosengine – this is where we will be holding chat events and also provides a calendar of events and a message-board, all of which will plop neatly into the new site at chaosengine.com in due course. Don’t be spooked if you get an invite from us in your in-box as a gentle reminder…

Also, as mentioned before, we’re in the process of building http://www.wasp-factory.co.uk where in the near future you’ll find information about all Wasp Factory artists and sneak previews of work in progress, and both sites will be smothered in new MP3 files for you to download in the near future.

— birthday party —

Oh, and one last thing… I shall be celebrating my ‘coming of age’ birthday at Branson’s (it’s not that I have any affinity to the place, it’s just the best we have round here!) in Cheltenham on Satruday 11th November, and the more the merrier! However, this is an invite-only do, so please mail me at chaosengine@custodian.com and I’ll put you on the list if you want to come along and be part of my 21st (HA!) Birthday celebrations!

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST 1/9/2000

— introduction —

Greetings, you splendid digesters of prime Chaos Spam and welcome to another update on the continuing adventures of The Chaos Engine. Well, we hope you all had a fun time over the bank holiday at Infest / Distopia / Reading / Greenbelt and thouroughly enjoyed VNV Nation / Horatii / Some Corporate Rock or other / Simon Mayo, and are now fully rested and ready to become a productive member of society again…

— Chaos Engine in Dublin —

Just a gentle reminder of the fist Chaos Engine gig in what seems like ages will be taking place on Saturday 16th September at Dominion, Frazers, 35 O’Connell St. Dublin 1. All the info you could ever want and more is at their exquisite website at http://www.dominion.gothic.ie/

This is going to be a bit of a special one for us, as well be playing a couple of brand new tracks and have overhauled some of the older stuff to give the more hardened Chaos Engine Gig-Goer a few surprises. And what with http://www.ryanair.com doing return flights to Dublin for NINE POUNDS (shurely shome mishtake?!), this is the perfect opportunity to squeeze in a Chaotic and dirty weekend before all your relatives start telling you what they want for Christmas…

— Wasp Factory Recordings —

Some exciting news on the continuing fortune of Wasp Factory recording. We’ve coerced Brighton promoter, DJ, visionary and all round good guy, Eris ( http://vzone.virgin.net/eris.co ) out of his all-too early retirement to help us turn Wasp Factory into the behemoth it always threatened to be. Eris will be helping us to hunt for new flesh, organising scams of the most devious nature and ligging backstage worse than usual…

In other news, our compilation album, ‘Working With Children & Animals’ is coming along swimmingly and due for release in the first week of December, backed up by the mother of all gigs to celebrate! We’re also pleased to announce that the inimitable Dr A. of Goteki / SBM infamy will be working on some of the artwork for the project, but for now we’re playing our pokémon cards close to our chest as to what he’s up to!

— Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganza 2000 —

It’s back and this time it’s personal… bigger and badder than ever, this year’s Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganza will be at BRANSON’S, Albion Street, Cheltenham on FRIDAY 22nd DECEMBER. This year’s event is going to be even more out there than previously with hand-picked support from Squid and Freudstein, and a bevy of star guests, full Chaos decor and that all-important element of surprise and mayhem… Can you afford to miss it?

— Exit Club —

Developing something of a cult status now, this Chaos-approved evening of industrial-strength music brought to you by Lee JudasKiss and yours truly will be making you dance in fear at Branson’s Albion Street, Cheltenham on Saturday September 30th. Kick-off is 8pm (and it starts off REALLY strange, so get there early!) and entry is a meagre £2 before 10pm, £3 after.

— Outro —

This spamblast was brought to you by an obscene amount of coffee and hindered severely by Subspace (www.subspacehq.com) and other evil that a free internet connection brings into your home… ;¬)

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 2/8/2000

— intro —

Greetings again, you long forgotten disciples of Chaos, and welcome to a way overdue slab of spam from your favourite noisy old buggers! Apologies for not keeping you as up to date with our movements as we usually do, but things got pretty hectic towards the end of our latest outbreak of gigs, but needless to say we survived the P2k religious festival, the amassed bagpipery of In Extremo AND sharing a stage with the might and majesty that was Cymeria (RIP – if their website’s anything to go by…) Cheers to all that made us feel so welcome on our travels.

— Chaos Engine to play Dublin —

…and that was supposed to be the last of our gigs for this year. Except we’re hopeless whores to the live circuit and have accepted an offer too good to refuse… Just one more for the road…

— Working With Sex & Animals compilation for release in December —

Now that Parental Advisory studios is up & running again, and the likes of Tarantella Serpentine and Arkham Asylum are preparing to take up spells of residency to record their debut albums, we can reveal full details about our compilation album, “Wasp Factory Recordings presents… Working With Children & Animals, Volume 1″

Featuring 2 tracks each from the following bands:

ARKHAM ASYLUM

CHAOS ENGINE

HYDRA

LEECH WOMAN

SKINFLOWERS

SNEAKY BAT MACHINE

SQUID

TARANTELLA SERPENTINE

And seamlessly held together with the mixing prowess of FREUDSTEIN, this compilation showcases new, exclusive and forthcoming releases from some of the finest UK independent industrial-influenced bands on the circuit – but you know that already, don’t you…?

The album is due for release at the beginning of December 2000, and in typical Chaos style, will be celebrated with a big old launch party and all-star gig frenzy at a most prestigious venue in London. You will be duly informed…

— Chaos Engine Christmas party —

We know, you’re still waiting for summer to kick in… but we’ve already started to plan our Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganza 2000! Those present at last year’s monster event will remember the five-band bill, the regular stage invasions by various celebrities and scenesters, mince pies and ice-cream and the grand finale with the samba band… This year, we are aiming to go one bigger than that!

The date for your diary is Friday 22nd December 2000, and the venue of choice is Branson’s, Albion Street, Cheltenham (01242 573600). More details to follow soon.

— www.chaosengine.com due for revamp —

It’s been promised for a long time, but with Huw now being gainfully employed during daylight hours instead of lurking in some print shop, vampire-stylee, we’ll be plonking him infront of a warm internet connection and prodding him with long sticks to do that long-vaunted revamp for www.chaosengine.com

This time, we pledge, nay PROMISE, to include all the sordid photographic evidence of the last 6 months of hardcore gigging, MP3s of work in progress for the new album and an easy, painless way to part with your cash on-line for the full gamut of Chaos Engine goodies. But don’t hold your breath; an autoasphyxiated Chaos Engine fan is a useless Chaos Engine fan (or at least after rigor mortis sets in…)

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 30/5/2000

— introduction —

WHOOO! What a RUSH! Well, gotta say, consumers of Chaos, that I’m still on a high after the Chaotic Cheeserolling Weekender, in particular the suicidal downhill plummet after a 9lb block of cheese…

— cheeserolling weekender: a survivor’s tale —

For those of you who missed it, a big ‘NYAH NYAH!’ as it really was one of the most spectacularly bonkers nights of my life, and I suspect I was not alone.

The gig on Saturday featured incendiary performances from all bands, universally believed to be the best-ever gigs for both Arkham Asylum & Tarantella Serpentine, with Sneaky Bat Machine just being their wonderful selves with a distinct cheese flavour! The Pre-Roll barbecue was also magnificent despite the non-appearance of the Brothers Skinflowers due to the mother of all flu, but DJ Bernine filled the gap wih his seamless mixing of ‘timeless’ ‘classics’ that even had The Rattler shaking his booty!

But the prize for event of the decade has to go to the actual cheeseroll itself, which saw Dr A from SBM, DJ Eris, ALL of Arkham Asylum and my good self tumbling down the hill after said cheese. Our death-defying antics were caught on camera and have been aired on BBC TV & Central television – the former showing me rolling (dis)gracefully down the hill, the latter resplendent with a post-roll Dr A screaming “WHAT A RUSH!” maniacally into the camera!

You can find coverage of the madness, complete with pro-celebrity photos at This Is Gloucestershire (Cool Dr A pic!) and at the BBC news site (Photo of Eris, Amon Asylum and me looking totally poo-scared!)

The website will be updated soon with photos (and hopefully videos) of the whole spectacle, so stay tuned for further info! Also, watch out for a brief snippet in a forthcoming documentary on Channel 4 about music festivals, and a big chaotic cheesy hug to Tim Day who filmed the whole event from soundcheck to St John’s ambulance!

— P2k —

Since we’re on a roll (groan!), just one more item of news regarding an event that has caused much scratching of heads and puzzled expressions… it appears that The Chaos Engine have been asked to HEADLINE one of the stages at this year’s PENTECOST 2000 religious music festival taking place at Cheltenham Racecource on Saturday June 10th. Christ on a bike!

Yeah, we’re as confused as you are as to what we’re doing there and have clearly been booked by someone with a complete absence of our recorded output, but we figure there’s some fun to be had in performing a completely unrestrained set of Chaos Engine tunes with a view to enlightening the religiously sensetive… Keep watching the press for more media-jamming!

— wasp factory recordings —

Despite all the mayhem surrounding the weekend, we still had time to conduct a little business on behalf of our label. The hot news is that Sneaky Bat Machine are the latest band to be added to our ‘Working With Children & Animals’ compilation CD, due out at the end of the year, and that we’ll also be looking after the release of the as-yet-untitled debut album from Arkham Asylum in the near future. Excited? I can hardly type!

— www.chaosengine.com update & merchandise —

By the time you read this, all of our Chaos Engine goodies will be available by mail-order from the site, including our new ultra-EP ‘More Songs About Sex & Angles’ and all our brand-new T-Shirts. We’re also going to be sorting out a spot of the old e-commerce allowing you to abuse your credit-card in the name of Chaos in the near future.

In the next few weeks, we’ll also be posting up photos of our latest escapades, including snaps from Whitby, our ever-mental Sex & Angels launch party and hopefully the full carnage from the Chaotic Cheeserolling weekender! If you have any photos of us out on manoeuvres on your website that you wouldn’t mind us linking to, please drop us a line at chaosengine@custodian.com – the more the merrier!

— new album in planning —

And way off on the horizon is the Third Chaos Engine album…the result of an unholy gene-splicing experiment between Atari Teenage Riot, VNV Nation, Slipknot and Britney Spears… and in our heads this makes perfect sense and sounds just like The Chaos Engine’s third album was always meant to be! Keep an eye on our MP3 section for sneaky previews any time from…well, now onwards!

— exit club V3.0 —

Back by exceptionally popular demand, DJ ExitBoy (Chaos Engine) and DJ Judas (Judas Kiss magazine) will be back at the heartily Chaos-Approved Exit Club at Branson’s on 30 June 2000. These nights are traditionally highly-charged full-throttle evenings of darkest darkwave, full-on gabber, eevil techno and old-skool grebo – miss it and miss out!

— wasp factory recordings —

Our own pet record label, Wasp Factory Recordings has stepped up a gear with the imminent release of the debut album by Skinflowers, entitled ‘Data In A Hurry’ and featuring 14 tracks that occupy the awkward & claustrophobic grey area between Radiohead, Big Black and The Smiths – check out http://www.skinflowers.co.uk for full details & release date.

Following on from this, we’ll be dragging Tarantella Serpentine into the Wasp Factory studios for work on his as yet untitled debut album in the forthcoming weeks as well as continuing work for the ‘Working With Children & Animals’ compilation due out in late 2000.

If you’ve no idea who Skinflowers or Tarantella Serpentine are, or quite why we’re getting excited about them, you’ll have an opportunity to see both bands joining us live as special guests at some of our forthcoming gigs – check out the gigs section of our website for full details and then you’ll know what all the fuss is about!

— compilation CD now well underway —

What with all the excitement of the local elections and our post-Whitby Betty Ford Clinic stay, our compilation CD, “Wasp Factory Recordings presents ‘working with children & animals volume 1′” will be released slightly later than anticipated, but will still be released in this first year of the Millennium. Expect to see new and exclusive tracks from CHAOS ENGINE, LEECH WOMAN, SQUID, HYDRA, SKINFLOWERS, TARANTELLA SERPENTINE and ARKHAM ASYLUM, to name but seven, with more to be confirmed. We’ll also be launching this one in spectacular style, so drink a glass of milk and line your stomach in preparation for some hardcore celebration!

Well, no-one in the Chaos camp has had to give up their job to pursue a career in local politics, which is a nice way of saying we didn’t win! But then again, we didn’t get disqualified for canvassing for votes, ( :-) and we kept the Tories at bay, scoring a MASSIVE 2.16% of the vote! The full story can be found at:

And as if that wasn’t enough, you can read our first snifter of press attention at http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/scripts/edarchdisplay.asp?section=Local+news&ID=44022&source=E

Feeling left out? Want to be part of the Chaos? Why not come to our Chaos Party rally?! Supporters of Chaos will be meeting in Cheltenham High Street, outside the Regent Arcade at 2pm on Saturday April 22nd – yes, that’s the day after our CD launch if you want to make a bit of a weekender of it. We’ll be spreading the word of Chaos by any means necessary (but mostly with flyers, badges and a friendly smile :) and we’ve been promised plenty of press coverage, so come along in your best perv-wear or fancy-dress… infact, don’t bother changing out of your glad-rags from the previous evening!

If you’d like more information on what The Chaos Party stand for and what you can do to help, visit our official Chaos Party website at http://www.chaosengine.fsnet.co.uk

— OUTRO —

This spamblast was brought to you by the power of jet-lag and what British Airways thinks passes for vegan in-flight food, Melt Banana and Foetus CD’s, incinerated Linda McCartney veg sausages, American Psycho and Julian Cope’s ‘Repossessed’ Autobiography, and the next one is due to be hindered by Syphon Filter 2, Double Dutch lager and political slur campaigns (don’t look under the mattress!!)

CHAOS ENGINE NEWSBLAST, 24/03/2000

— introduction —

Greetings, consumers of the spam of Chaos, and welcome to an uncharacteristically short broadcast from our fragrant shores. We’re truly burning the candle at both ends this month. In a microwave. At the bottom of an active volcano. On the surface of the sun. If you see what I mean…

— more songs about sex & angels —

Yes, it’s true, we finished the new ‘single’ last week, and it clocks in at a girthsome 74 minutes long! See the website or previous spamblasts for the finished tracklist, but for those late to the party, it contains a new version of ‘Angel Of Ruin’, 5 new tracks, 6 celebrity remixes and our Chaotic covers of Ace of Spades, Kids In America and Barbie Girl!

As usual, the launch will be heralded by a variety of bizarre party shenanigans. This time, due to the sad loss of the Axiom (see later) we will be launching the CD at BRANSON’S, 20 Albion Street, Cheltenham. It’s a classy little venue with a music hall vibe, red-tiled toilets and wicker furniture… but don’t let that put you off. The exact format of the evening is still a top secret but we can tell you that the evening will typically chaotic with DJing services provided in part by DJ Candice from Sanctuary.

But if you JUST CAN’T WAIT and you want to be one of the FIRST to receive this cornucopia of sonic goodness, SEND MONEY NOW!

Send a cheque or Postal Order (does anyone still use these?) payable to THE CHAOS ENGINE, or well-concealed UK currency to the value of £10 to:

— axiom closed; a nation mourns —

As I mentioned in a previous mailout, The Axiom Centre, the spiritual home & gigging HQ of The Chaos Engine has now been closed. Thanks loads to all of you that signed our on-line petition – we managed to get over 2,200 signatures in little over a week.

The Council have now pledged to help re-open the venue but don’t seem to be in *too* much of a hurry to do so. Hence the campaign has now been shifted into a new gear of letter-writing and faxing local MP’s. You can do all this without leaving the comfort of your modem or even licking a stamp; simply visit the supporter’s group site at http://www.custodian.com/axiom where by some ludicrously clever code, you’ll be able to bother local dignitaries with faxes by e-mail… go forth and aggravate!

— vote chaos! —

Let it not be said that The Chaos Engine are the kind of band to sit and moan about things being wrong without doing something about it… On May 4th, The Chaos Engine, or rather the Rt Hon Lee H, will be standing for Local Government!

So those of you living in Cheltenham – VOTE CHAOS! VOTE CHAOS!!

We’ll be campaigning for more support for the arts, and in particular music in Cheltenham, as well as more provision for the youth of the town. We’ll also be campaigning for the extension of licencing hours in the town and the increase of licences granted for live music and clubs.

As of Friday, March 25th, The Chaos Party became registered as an official Political Party in the UK. YaY! We will be standing for election in the Local Elections in Cheltenham with policies designed to make the town a more fun and Chaotic place to live in, so keep an eye out for info on our Vote Chaos campaign or visit the Vote Chaos website at www.chaosengine.fsnet.co.uk Better still, if you are interested in causing Chaos in your own town, why not contact us at chaosengine@cuatodian.com and register as a Councillor of Chaos?!

— new t-shirts —

Four new designs are completed and due to be sent to our good friends at Toxiclothes this week(you may have seen their catalogues when we sent you a christmas card). We have special ‘Angel Of Ruin’, ‘Industry Standard Beauty’, ‘Kill Your Boss…’ and ‘Tough on Goth’ designs, and your first chance to buy these essential fashion items will be at the Ultraviolence gig at The Garage, London on April 1st (no, really, no kidding!). Post ordering details will be on the website as soon as we have said garments in our sweaty eager hands.

We’ve also got some CE logo badges in lurid orange or sexy purple – these are totally FREE! Just send an SAE to PO BOX 270, Cheltenham, Glos, GL51 9YE and we’ll send you a bundle of goodies totally gratis!

— project alchemy —

Well, if we had a pound for every time we said that Project Alchemy was nearly done, we’d probably have enough to buy a britney Spears album by now, but, by jiminy, the damn thing is actually finished!

The Chaos Engine will also be providing score / soundtrack for the film with work starting in April and a possible release on Wasp Factory Recordings to coincide with the film in the Summer.

Finally, BloodRose will be working on a video for another, as-yet-undecided ‘single’ release towards the end of 2000.

— wasp factory recordings —

Parental Advisory has been awash with activity in the period since Christmas, and the only people that aren’t pleased about it are the neighbours…

We’re proud to announce the arrival of the as yet untitled album by Skinflowers which is undergoing its final production tweaks as we speak. Describing the music of Skinflowers is like, to paraphrase someone famous who I’ve forgotten, like dancing about architecture. For those who haven’t caught their music yet, try to bend your head around a claustrophobic mix of Radiohead, Big Black, The Smiths, Brian Eno, David Bowie and The Sundays. Not even slightly goth, but beautifully dark nonetheless, and due for release on the 2nd April – see http://www.skinflowers.co.uk for all the news that’s fit to print and many views that aren’t.

We’ve just finished recording 3 tracks for Arkham Asylum which could end up godknowswhere and are awaiting a less hectic window for their final mixes. Remixing duties on the LeechWoman tracks are going well, and to return the favour, you’ll be able to hear a remastered version of their remix of our very own ‘Purge’ on a forthcoming LeechWoman EP. And the nurturing hand of Wasp Factory is also due to gently massage the outpourings of Tarantella Serpentine into a dancefloor-friendly head-scrambler halfway between Sheep On Drugs and Soft Cell…

— website —

What? You haven’t spotted the new MP3 files yet??! Yes, the much-promised updates have begun, and there will be more to come including a revamped links section and some clever on-line ordering stuff, HTML permitting!

CHAOS ENGINE NEWSBLAST, 27/02/2000

— introduction —

Greetings to all you consumers of Chaos to another tasty dollop of spam detailing the manoeuvres of your ever-controversial agit-dustrial favourites The Chaos Engine. Well, to the untrained eye it may well look like we’ve been taking a well-earned sabbatical after the massive anti-climax that was the millennium, when in actual fact, nothing could be further from the truth! Continue, dear reader, and all will be come illuminated in glorious Chaotovision!

— more songs about sex & angels —

The eternally-forthcoming single “More Songs About Sex & Angels” is now approximately 82.74% completed and sounding like the mighty behemoth we always wanted it to be. Now running to 15 tracks and set to incorporate a CD-ROM element from our old friends at BloodRose (more later), the single contains a re-recording of ‘Angel Of Ruin’, 5 new tracks, 6 remixes and those oft-requested live cover versions. The track-listing is:

1- ANGEL OF RUIN (new version)

2- PARASITIC LOVE SONG

3- BITTER TASTE (co-written with G Skinflower)

4- PHOTOCOPIED LOVE SONG

5- EUPHORIA

12- ANGEL OF RUIN (Inkubus Sukkubus Mix)

13- KIDS IN AMERICA

14- ACE OF SPADES

15- BARBIE GIRL

The single is set to retail at less than a tenner (wot for all that? YES, FOR ALL THAT!) and will be released on GOOD FRIDAY, 21st April 2000

CHAOS ENGINE NEWSFLASH, 22/01/2000

— introduction —

Good-day to all you consumers of Chaos, and welcome to another pre-processed portion of spam for your delictation…

— new mailing list —

The more astute among you may have noticed that we are now using a brand new mailing list to deliver spam with greater precision to your mailbox (and, erm, apologies for any confusion that was caused while we sorted it out!). This will mean it is easier for you to subscribe and change your mail settings, we can add you more easily and there will be no more annoying banner ads at the bottom of our mail! Hooray! A big thank-you to Kieran and his toybox for his help, and a night on the booze is well due to him!

— more songs about sex and angels —

Our new E.P is now well underway, and we can now confirm that it’s going to be a mothelode of Chaos for you to digest! Defying the Gallup regulations and very nearly the laws of physics, our new ‘single’ will be over an hour long and contain at least twelve tracks! Confirmed goodies include:

* Re-recorded version of ‘Angel of Ruin’

* 4 brand new tracks

* Exclusive remixes, including reconstructions of Chaos Engine songs by Sneaky Bat Machine, Inkubus Sukkubus, Solomon Kane (of punk band Discharge) Freudstein and Jefferson

* Our much sought after cover versions of ‘Ace of Spades’, ‘Kids in America’ and ‘Barbie Girl’ with special guest vocals!

‘More Songs about Sex and Angels’ is due for release on Good Friday, 21st April 2000, and will of course be marked by some chaotic shenanigans somewhere or other… more details to folow!

— chaos engine confirmed for whitby april 2000 —

Yes, we’re BACK! Due to popular demand (mostly by us!), we will be playing the Whitby Gothic weekend 2000, appearing at the Spa Pavillion on Friday 28th April. we’d love to tell you who else is playing, but frankly we haven’t got a clue (and anyone else who claims to know is probably lying anyway…:)! Book early to avoid disappointment…

— other live chaos for 2000 —

Although we’ve got fingers in so many pies it almost hurts (and certainly makes typing difficult), we don’t have anything 1000% confirmed except Whitby. However, you can jolly well pencil in gigs at the Bullingdon Arms, Oxford on 13th February for a Valentine’s masked ball, and a gig at The Garage with Ultraviolence on either the last Saturday in March or on April Fool’s Day! Check our website, which we’ll update with full details as soon as the ink is dry on the contracts.

— wasp factory recordings —

As part of our continuing commitment to fill your life with Chaos-approved wierdness, our very own Wasp Factory Recordings label is shifting up a gear to bring you the following treats. Firstly, in the spring we will be releasing the long-awaited debut CD by Skinflowers, who some of you may remember from our Christmas show. For the uninitiated, their music is post-millennium post-radiohead post-fight club beatbox angst that never fails to amaze me. Be sure to check out The Skinflowers Website for a sneak preview of their music and madness.

Then, in October, we are planning our first compilation CD, provisionally titled ‘Wasp Factory – Working with Children & Animals Volume 1′ which will feature 8 artists, each contributing 2 songs. Bands confirmed so far include The Chaos Engine (obviously!), LeechWoman, Squid, Skinflowers, Hydra, Arkham Asylum and Tarantella Serpentine. The launch will be marked by a gig or two in the anarchic style of our Christmas show and in conjunction with the very wonderful Nemesis Promotions.

Shortly after this, we will be releasing the first album by breakbeat-poet Tarantella Serpentine, an unholy marriage of chunky loops, evil synths and downright dark and disturbing spoken word and lyrical observations to fill the empty void that the demise of Sheep On Drugs and Soft Cell left in your life.

You’ll get a handy one-off chance to see Skinflowers, Arkham Asylum and Tarantella Serpentine at the (entirely unnoficial butr could almost be Wasp Factory Recordings) showcase at The Axiom Centre, Cheltenham on Tuesday 7th March 2000 – and whatsmore, entry is entirely free.

— the word from Parental Advisory studios —

Currently locked and loaded in the studio, we are currently spreading a little Chaos to our nearest and feircest, Leech Woman, working on no less than 3 separate remixes of their as-yet-unreleased track ‘Kincaid’ from their forthcoming album. I fear to think what will happen to the end product when I return it to its rightful anglegrinder-wielding owners…

We’re also in the production seat for the first Arkham Asylum recordings, assisting with the finishing touches on the Skinflowers album, and priming the sequencers to receive the first batch of Tarantella Serpentine’s evil prose…

…and no, for the record, we don’t get much sleep.

Not quite as updated as we’d hoped, but still worth a visit nonetheless, you’ll now find an up-to-date list of every gig we’ve ever played and dozens of new photos from Whitby 99 (on and off stage) and our Christmas show.

In the coming soon file is the bootleg from our Christmas show, and we will be converting the offending article into MP3 files and uploading them to the site in the very near future (won’t we, Huw?! :) – including edited highlights of the 40-minute finale of ‘Merry Christmas everybody’ with the Stroud School of Samba!

We’ll also be providing an on-line ordering service to buy our CD’s from Peoplesound.com in the very near future, including the now out of stock ‘Bigger Than God’ and ‘Industrial Might & Magic’ EP’s – completists – stand by your beds!

— exit club —

For those of you that missed the first one, this is an irregular club night of eclectic mayhem at the always mentalist Axiom Centre in Cheltenham with resident DJ’s Lee JudasKiss and my good self (AKA DJ ExitBoy) playing everything from Atari Teenage Riot to Zodiac Mindwarp without fear of popping in to see Daisy Chainsaw & N-Trance (?!) en-route.

The next instalment of The Exit Club is on 24th March from 9pm – 2am. Full details on (01242) 521713 or visit The Axiom Website or This Rocks! (and it does…) and also has several reviews of Chaos Engine shenanigans for your parusal.

— outro —

This spamblast was brought to you with the help of The Triops, Tai Chi, Gormenghast, Fink Brau, Endsleigh Insurance, The League of Gentlemen and Dogma, and with the hinderance of Tenchu, Sleepy Hollow, Cheltenham Borough Council, Fink Brau and Tekken 3

— more songs about sex & angels EP —

With so much going on, it was inevitable that something would end up not happening on time… with the massive demands of rehearsing for our most spectacular Christmas show to date, the ‘More Songs About Sex & Angels’ E.P. had to be postponed until the New Year.

Now we are taking a few weeks out of gigging to concentrate on new material, we will be able to set to work finishing writing and recording new tracks for the E.P, getting the pro-celebrity remixes back and recording a few special treats – including studio versions of our oft-requested live cover versions Ace of Spades, Kids in America and Barbie Girl!! The new release date looks set to be some time in March 2000 and will be accompanied by our usual outburst of frenetic gigging.

Don’t fret if you have already filled in one of our response cards and ordered the EP – not only will you get the album before it is officially released AND at a cheaper price thn everybody else, but you’ll also receive a free CD-R with sneak previews of our new material!

— gigs for Y2k —

We’re not at libety to tell you the full details of our manoeuvres for year 2000 quite yet, but we can tell you that we are putting together a full UK tour or two, A one-off London show in February, an appearance at your favourite Northern gothic weekend in April, and planning to leave the country for purposes of noise-mongering in the spring if all goes to plan… Watch this space for news as it breaks…

— compilation CD and new releases on Wasp Factory Recordings —

In the summer of 2000, we are looking to round up some of our favourite alt-dustrial and noisy friends to put together our first ‘Wasp Factory Presents…’ compilation CD. On this amazingly value-mongous CD, you’ll be able to hear tracks from some of the finest and most cutting edge bands in the darkwave/industrial/alt-pop field. We’re still working out the fine details, but we can guarantee that it will be jam-packed with top quality noise and backed up with some all-star shows coming to a town near you soon…

In addition, our label Wasp Factory Recordings will be releasing albums by other artists, including Skinflowers in March and Tarantella Serpentine sometime in the Autumn. Keep an eye out on the site for news about the Wasp Facotry Recordings website and forthcoming release celebrations.

— more t-shirts coming soon —

Exactly what it says on the tin… we’ve sold out of our ‘TOUGH ON GOTH – TOUGH ON THE CAUSES OF GOTH’ T-shirts and have only a handful of our UV-reactant ones left. But fear not, as we’re putting the finishing touches to our spring / summer collection… We’ll be doing more ‘TOUGH ON GOTH’ T-shirts, ‘INDUSTRY STANDARD BEAUTY’ girlie t-shirts in silver, post-millennium ‘IT’S NOT SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER’ and agit-prop ‘KILL YOUR BOSS…QUIT YOUR JOB…GET A LIFE…THIS IS NOT A REHEARSAL’ T-shirts.

SEND NO MONEY NOW! We’ll let you know when these goodies are in stock and send you the full order details.

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 15/11/99

–introduction —

Greetings, you mighty consumers of Chaos you, and welcome to another prime slice of spam to keep you warm & informed as the winter nights draw in. Well, we’ve just enjoyed our final weekend in bed / rehab after Whitby and are preparing for the final leg of our gigging regime for the rest of the millennium, preparing to go with a collection of controlled bangs and maybe even a few sexy whimpers…

— black celebration & whitby – thank-you! —

It has to rate as one of the best weeks of my life… going from playing infront of 1000-odd cyber-bunnies at the LA2 on a Sunday teatime to playing to 1000-odd assorted Goths at the Pavillions in Whitby 6 days later – just amazing. Thank-you to all the mad disciples of Chaos, old and new, who bounced and perked to both our sets at these events (and even sang along – scary!), and made us feel like the pop-stars we always wanted to be. Fab! You can re-live the experience by whizzing to these fantastic people’s sites:

For MP3 video of us onstage at the Pavillions (achtung! big file download, but worth it!):

http://www.gothgems.force9.co.uk/whitby992/

For photos of us onstage and various off-duty shenanigans (eek! watch out for the vibro-sword!!):

More photos to appear on the website soon…stay tuned!

— chaos engine burn-out tour – the end is nigh —

For those of you who missed out on our weekend of stardom, fear not! The Chaos juggernaut is still on the road, and calling at the following destinations before 00/00/00:

Friday 3 December

The FreeButt, Brighton

Friday 10 December – and this is the biggie, lest ye forget…!

THE ANNUAL CHAOS ENGINE EXTRAVAGANZA!!

The Axiom, Cheltenham

See GIG section for full line-ups and details

— more songs about sex & angels EP delayed —

Well, unfortunately, something had to give… Due to circumstances, some beyond our control, and some only on the fringe of our control, we have had to delay the release of our new EP until early next year. we simply didn’t have the time to get everything done to the standard we wanted, and decided that rather than fob you off with something a bit average, we’d hold fire and get everything done properly and sounding amazing. What we can tell you is that the new EP will feature the new track ‘Parasite Song’ that we played at the LA2 and Whitby as well as superstar remixes and new recordings of songs that feature in our live set.

— the exit club – chaos related shenanigans? —

Oh, just one more thing… If you’re looking for a suitable pre-Christmas blaze-of-glory dance-til-your-bum-drops-off night out in Cheltenham (or are still left over after the Christmas Extravaganza) you could do much worse than pop along to the opening night of THE EXIT CLUB which is being held at The Axiom Cente, Cheltenham (01242) 690243 on 23rd December. The playlist is highly Chaos-Approved featuring a mix of ‘Industrial, Dark Techno, Grebo, Noise & 80’s Cheese’ containing most of what made the Engine what we are today from World Domination Enterprises to Adrenalin Junkies via Nine Inch Nails, Foetus and Ultraviolence – yay! DJ’s Judas (of Judas Kiss zine) and ExitBoy are your resident noisemongers, with tunes from 9pm – 2am for a modest £3. Members of The Chaos Engine will be severely unwinding at this event and propping up the bar, so come along and meet us off-duty!

— outro —

This Spamblast was brought to you by Winner Tacos, Tequila El Ranchero, Red Devil and milkshake (cheers, Jo!), ridiculous cow-print fur-fabric fashion faux-pas (taking ourselves too seriously? are you for real?!) and inappropriate moshing, and severely hampered by Armored Core on the PlayStation and re-runs of The League of Gentlemen on a Friday evening…

Lee H THE CHAOS ENGINE 15/11/99 CHAOS ENGINE NEWSBLAST, 15/10/99

— introduction —

Welcome all you net-heads to another unhealthy dose of spam from your friends at Chaos Engine HQ. Just a short blast this time as we’re currently flat-out working on new material, preparing for our Christmas Extravaganza and recovering from our heavy gigging regime… pass the Haagen Dazs, nurse!

— Chaos Engine in Metal Hammer —

Yes, our fifteen minutes start NOW! On the November issue of Metal Hammer (released last week), you’ll find a juicy slice of Chaos in the form of ‘888’ – neither metally or indeed, erm, hammery, and rubbing shoulders with Cannibal Corpse & Type O Negative, we’re just hoping that a whole bunch of Coal Chamber fans are going to be open-minded enough to deal with it… well, Rome wasn’t built in a day…

There’s also a lovely money-off voucher for the album in the back of the magazine knocking a not unsubstantial £2 off the album in HMV – that’s like giving you a free pint!

— christmas extravaganza gets out of hand (again) —

In case you’ve only just arrived, this year’s Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganza is taking place on 10th December at The Axiom Centre, Cheltenham, and features a bill that makes Glastonbury look like a church fete! (sort of). The current line-up is:

CHAOS ENGINE SPAMBLAST, 26/9/99

— introduction —

Howdyhowdyhowdy all you dedicated followers of Chaos, and welcome to another info-blast of Engineering news… we’re still aching from our gig with Waterglass and Leisure Hive at The Red Eye on Saturday, which was a corker by all accounts – nice to see such an all-star crowd in attendance too, with members of Inertia and LeechWoman present, as well as Mr Nemesis, Mr Resurrection, Mr & Mrs Bratcave and Mr Eurobeat 2000. Ooh, I do love it when everybody is getting along with each other…

— extra shows on the Chaos Engine burn-out tour —

The first and most pressing is a date that in all the excitement we forgot to put on our recent mail-out. This Friday, 1st October, we will be playing at The Twist in Colchester. Support comes from rising goth stars Black Alpha. Hope you can make it if you’re in the area, despite the late notice.

Next up, the Oxford date, previously at The Dolly on 18th November, has now changed date and venue, and is to take place on Friday the 19th November at the Philanderer and Firkin, Oxford instead. Thanks to Tobias for his work on that one – you star!

Finally, the much-juggled return visit to Brighton will take place on Friday 3rd December at The Freebutt, promoted by the lovely Eris Promotions (anyone who buys me ice-cream deserves a plug…)

— Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganza —

…is shaping up very nicely, thanks for asking. The current line up is:

The Chaos Engine (obviously!)

plus special guest appearances the like of which you’ve never seen!

with support from:

HYDRA (tbc)

SYNTHEYIC

BLACK ALPHA

SKINFLOWERS

+DJ JUDAS and DJ FLOORCLEARANCE (weather permitting)

The date is Friday 10th December, the venue is The Axiom Centre, Cheltenham (01242) 690243, festivities kick off at 8pm, and entry is ONE POUND before 10pm!!

— Project Alchemy – the resurrection! —

Those of you that have been following the band for some time will know that back when we were recording ‘Difficult’ in the mists of time, we also worked on a soundtrack for a film called Project Alchemy, in exchange for a promo video for the track ‘Criminal’ (which can be seen on the CD-ROM section of the remastered version of our first album.) Anyway, after nearly 2 years in production hell, the film has resurfaced and is close to completion. We will be reworking the original masters of the music, working on new material, and also providing the theme tune in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for details of the premiere of the film, and a possible release date for the soundtrack…

— work in progress —

Despite pushing back the boundaries of physical exertion on tour, we are still up to no good in the studio; we are currently working on a couple of brand-new tracks we hope to play live towards the end of the tour, and are also planning to overhaul a few old standards into new live versions to give you regular gig-goers something else to listen out for. Some of you eagle-eyed punters may have also noticed tht we’ve been working on a few new slides and images for our light-show too…

We have just completed remixes for Inkubus Sukkubus (Away with The Faeries) and American band Zeitmahl (BoyGun), and are currently eviscerating a Narcissus Pool track (The Wag Club) before giving it a Chaotic once-over and putting it back together again. No idea what the aforememntioned bands plan to do with the remixes, mind you…

The “More songs about sex and angels” EP has been delayed due to the illness of our string quartet, and we’re still waiting for a couple of pro-celebrity remixes to drop through our letterboxes. The likelihood is that it will be released to coincide with the Christmas Extravaganza, and will probably be limited to 100 copies. Also, any DJ’s reading this who are still wating for their promo copies of tracks, sit tight, as we’re actually recording a few tracks especially for inclusion!

— outro —

This spamblast has been brought to you by ridiculously cheap creme de cassis and coffee from a few days rehab in Paris, and has been seriously hindered by Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation, and our round-the-clock quest to convert S&M images to text files to slides for your titilation…

NEWSBLAST, 09/09/99

— introduction —

Howdy folks! Well, what a rollercoaster week it’s been! We’ve been up and down like the Assyrian Empire in the last 7 days and no mistake! After a frantic performance at the rather lovely Distopia and pulling off a gabber-duatrial version of ‘Barbie Girl’ at The Axiom Cover-Up gig (soon available as an MP3, but you really *had* to be there…), we were on a bit of a high. But then…

— Chaos Engine reviews in Metal Hammer & Rock Scene —

Well, Metal Hammer were actually quite nice to us, but gave us a bit of a low score in their ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ review, but Rock Scene really didn’t seem to dig the Chaos Engine vibe, maaan. We’ll let you dig out their comments for yourself if you can be arsed.

— HULL gig CANCELLED —

And then THIS happened… it is with great regret that we have to tell you that our gig at The Room in Hull that was due to take place this Monday (13th September) has been CANCELLED. This is due to the absence of either a PA or a sound engineer at the venue, which had been overlooked until half-past the eleventh hour. We tried to get the gig moved to the Adelphi in Hull, but unfortunately it clashed with an Acoustic evening…

We will NOT be rescheduling this gig, but we ARE hoping to do a gig in Hull in the near future under our own steam – stay tuned for details!

— http://www.chaosengine.com – MAJOR update! —

We’ve been working our typing fingers to the bone this week updating the website for you, and treats are there to behold! Have a surf around and see if you can spot:

— New photos on the site including gigs with Ineria & Spahn Ranch, Andi Sex Gang and The Axiom Great cover-up (now dubbed “the gold lame incident” – visit the site and you’ll see why!

— A new shop section allowing you to order our new album OBSTINATE and other goodies direct from us.

— Updated links section with some wierd & wonderful treats!

— Movement of our e-mailing list from one place to another to make it easier to join up! If you’re a member of the old list, you’ll need to transfer to the new ONElist one – you should have received info on how to do this, but if not, drop is a line, or re-register on the site.

— autumn / winter tour – the latest —

First up, apologies for the confusion regarding our gig supporting Waterglass in London; although we’re ALWAYS celebrating, the gig is really a launch party for the Waterglass single. We’ll be doing a nice long set though, and the evening should be a hum-dinger!

Anyway, the ever-changign line-up can be found in our GIGS section – just click the button on the left!

— outro —

This spamblast has been brought to you by sheer bloody-mindedness in the face of people who should know better. I’m now going to go for a long lie down in a darkened room…

Lee H THE CHAOS ENGINE 09/09/99

24/8/99

— introduction —

The Chaos bus is coming, the wheels of steel are turning…

An inter-city disco, from, erm, Cheltenham to Bristol this week.

After a wholly confusing but utterly entertaining evening in the presence of Andi Sex Gang and his troupe of performers, we all feel thoroughly educated and a little queasy, but we’ve certainly got some new ideas for our Christmas extravaganza… Anyone who was as this totally splenidid Nemesis event will be easily identified due to their aversion to Mars Bars & chocolate fingers for the forseeable future…!

— OBSTINATE out now! —

Now available pretty much everywhere, for those of you who don’t already know, our debut album OBSTINATE has been released and is available directly from us {£12 inc P&P to THE CHAOS ENGINE, PO BOX 270, CHELTENHAM GL51 9YE} or from any self-respecting record shop {Via Plastic Head distribution in the UK and Alice In… / Resurrection in Europe} – starting to receive rave reviews pretty much across the board, this album contains 14 tracks of pure Chaos for your delictation… your life is not complete without it! It’s that simple!!

— 888 to be featured on November’s Metal Hammer CD —

In an attempt to crawl into the collective psyches of the New Metal audience (and with not a small prayer that they’re open-minded enough to stray just a *little* distance from worshipping Coal Chamber…), Metal Hammer will be featuring the Chaos Engine track ‘888 (one bigger than god)’ on their November issue cover-mounted CD (due out in the second week of October). While not in the slightest bit Metal (or hammery for that matter), they were rather taken by the track, and should also be running a small feature on the band… stay tuned for reviews in Kerrang and RockScene magazine, too! Ooh, I’m getting a tingly feeling in my special region…

— autumn / winter tour shapes up —

I honestly don’t know if it’s possible for us to physically do this number of gigs, but we’re going to give it our best shot… no less than FIFTEEN opportunities to see us before the millennium is over, with more gigs being added and confirmed as we speak, including dates in Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Colchester and Northern Ireland!

Those of particular excitement include our London celebration of the launch of OBSTINATE at The Red Eye, King’s Cross, on 25th September with Waterglass and Leisure Hive, a support slot with the mighty ULTRAVIOLENCE at The Axiom, Cheltenham on 29th October, and places on the bill of both the Black Celebration festival at the LA2 in London on Hallowe’en with C-TEK and the Cerebrus all-day festival at Edinburgh Student’s Union at the end of November.

Click on the GIGS button – over there on the left, do you see?! – for a full list of our current manoeuvres.

— more photographic evidence at www.chaosengine.com —

Time-sensetive information; by this time next week there will be another batch of incriminating photos at http://www.chaosengine.com including the second consignment of photos from our launch party and live shots from Brighton and Cheltenham. Two weeks after that, there will be some photos from the Andi Sex Gang gig and Distopia 2 too… If there’s anything else you’d like to see on the website, just drop us an e-mail to chaosengine@cimmerii.demon.co.uk and we’ll see what we can do… naked photos of the band will of course be on a pay-per-view basis only.

— outro —

This spamblast has been brought to you in conjunction with the wonderful food that Nemesis always puts on for us at his gigs, a troupe of Hare Krishna dancers, a lady in a bottle and a snake-charmer… if you weren’t at the Andi Sex Gang gig, this won’t mean a damn thing to you..!

Lee H THE CHAOS ENGINE 24/8/99

12/7/99

— introduction —

Good-day to you, massed congregation of Chaos, and welcome to another dollop of Spam, filling you in on the manoeuvres of your favourite glamdustrial technopunk cyber-crusaders. Boy are we excited this week! As if you needed telling why…

— OBSTINATE launch party & on-line chat —

Well, despite fire, flood and acts of kidney disorder, we managed to get the album finished on time – we now have several hundred of these joyous articles in a variety of safe houses up and down the country, ready to iluminate your life in ways you never thought possible by mere digitally-encoded waveforms.

The album is released on JULY 19th 1999, and in usual Chaos Engine style, it’s launch is a major event with much madness, drunken revelry and good cheer!

The official launch party is to be held at THE AXIOM CENTRE, Cheltenham –(01242) 690243– – this will be the first opportunity to hear OBSTINATE in full and purchase your very own copy. All the band will be there in various states of intoxication and will be happy to personally graffiti your prised posessions or body-parts as required. Entry is entirely FREE, and there will be light refreshments, heavy drinking and free goodies for everyone! Doors open at about 8pm, and all that we ask is that you enter into the spirit of things and come dressed in either fetish, formal or fancy dress (or a choice blend of all three!)

For those of you that can’t make it out to our backwater hometown that is Cheltenham, we will be hosting an internet chat at 6pm on July 19th. You can throw questions, abuse and lewd suggestions at the band via our website at http://www.chaosengine.com – you’ll need to go to the CHAT section which is in the INTERACT zone of the website and spend a few minutes registering and filling in all the usual blah (it’s probably worth doing this a couple of days beforehand to familiarise yourself with the mechanics of it all). Previous chatroom antics have related in utter madness and entertaining confusion, with the band often answering questions of a lewd and lascivious nature – to miss it is to miss out!

Unfortunately, due to the joy that is The Mechanics Of The Record Industry, OBSTINATE will not be on general release (in shops and the like) until 13 September 1999. However, feel free to pre-order a copy by sending a cheque (payable to THE CHAOS ENGINE) for £12 to:

THE CHAOS ENGINE

PO BOX 270

CHELTENHAM

GL50 9YE

UNITED KINGDOM

…and we’ll do our best to make sure a copy of the album arrives on your doorstep on 19th July or very shortly afterwards.

— new T-shirts —

To celebrate the launch of our new album, we have some choice new T-Shirts available; pure and simple, featuring the Chaos Engine logo in bright yellow UV-reactant ink on the front, these t-shirts come in Extra-large and REALLY skinny-fit by popular demand. They will be available for the first time on that magic date of 19/7/99 for a very modest £8 (order details as above)

— more gigs —

Much excitement abounds in the house of Chaos this week, but rather annoyingly, we can’t go into details *quite* yet – suffice to say that as soon as anything is confirmed, you’ll be the first to know… All we can say for the time being, is that we’re planning a rather major outbreak of touring in October, and some of the dates will be in support of one of the band’s heroes and biggest influences – I think we’ll just let the rumour-mill roll on that one for a few weeks…

We’ve also just confirmed a date in the cosmopolitan city of Hull, in conjunction with Urbanite Clothing on 6th September as part of their regular fetish night out. Dust off and talc up your best rubber cozzie and apply jump-leads to your nipples (just don’t *start* anything…groan…) and we’ll see you in the play-pen.

Another pre-millennium date to scrawl in your diary in permanent marker is Friday December 10th 1999 – we know it’s almost half a year away, but this is the date for the Annual Chaos Engine Christmas Extravaganza – last year saw us share a stage with Sneaky Bat Machine, Rog from LeechWoman, and earn an honourable mention for ‘Best Gig’ on uk.people.gothic newsgroup. This year, we’ll be going all-guns blazing to win that title outright – we’re taking over the whole Axiom building, resplendent with 2 dancefloors, hand-picked support bands and a myriad of star guests, with entertainment to run from 8pm to 2am… book your time off work or start prepaing your alibi NOW!

— photo archive at www.chaosengine.com —

This platter of eye-candy is well underway, and due for unveiling (with a prevailing wind) on the magical date of the 19th July. At present, we are in the process of collating some 100+ photographs, and working out exactly when they were taken (and in some instances of what they actually depict…!) for your edification and entertainment. Don’t forget that there are *nineteen* free downloadable Chaos Engine tracks (in MP3 format) on the website already – every day is Christmas day for The Chaos Engine fan!

— outro —

This Spamblast has been brought to you courtesy of TonyGoth’s laptop, Cheltenham General Hospital, 2 litres of Tesco Value mineral water every hour and crushing disappointment at witnessing Marilyn Manson’s set at Milton Keynes Bowl this weekend… We have come for your crown, Brian.

— intoduction —

Welcome all, to another outburst of information spewing forth from the catacombs of Chaos. We all breathe a sigh of relief this week, as all the parts for our second album OBSTINATE were lovingly assembled, and against the odds actually left Chaos HQ on time and in one piece. Heroes of the week this week are Chris @ DB for his superhuman tolerance of us fannying about royally with the final mixes at the eleventh hour, and also to Tobias and the Oxford posse who made us feel godlike at the Dolly…we’ll be back…

— OBSTINATE launch party —

The album will be released on the 19th July by Wasp Factory Recordings – our very own record label, no less! – and distributed by PHD in the UK, Alcie In… in Gemany, Austria an Switzerland and via Resurrection Records everywhere else in the known universe. To celebrate, we’ll be holding a launch party on Monday 19th July at The Axiom Centre, Cheltenham (tel 01242 690243 for details) – This will be your first chance to buy the album, there will be jelly and ice-cream, Chaos biscuits and Chaos Crisps (we kid you not!) and we’ll be playing the whole opus in full while all the members of the band drink heavily… There will also be competitions and special guest appearances too.

To make it a bit special, we respectfully request that you dress in formal dress, industrio-goth or fetish manner, and since doing so will entitle you to a discount on Chaos Engine goodies, it’d be madness not to! Entry is totally and utterly free, and kick-off is 8pm… we’ll see you at the bar!

— even more gigs —

Chaos never sleeps! The band that simply can’t say no to being paid for being noisy and sweaty continue their assault on the UK’s eardrums… New dates include a slot at the Underworld, London on 20/11/99 supporting Mesh and special-secret guests, and we’ll get you the details of dates in Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford and Hull as they reach critical mass. And whatsmore, we’re already planning our biggest Christmas Extravaganza to make sure that if the lights go out in 2000, you’ll have some happy mamories to keep you warm…

— IMM EP – missing copies discovered behind wardrobe–

On a routine once-a-year hoover of Parental Advisory studios, we stumbled across a few unclaimed copies of the INDUSTRIAL MIGHT & MAGIC CD we released to coincide with our Christmas Extravaganza last year. These beauties have 7 tracks including remixes of Purge by Leech Woman and Broken Shell buy Squid, and have become weapons-grade collector’s items. To you, ladies and gentlemen, the clearance price of £6 including postage.

We only have 5 copies of this, so please e-mail us on chaosengine@cimmerii.demon.co.uk to reserve a copy before sending us your moolah to avoid disappointment

— BIGGER THAN GOD e.p. —

Released less than a month ago, we’re down to our last 20 copies already! Then again, it’s such cracking value with 8 tracks for a modest £5 (inc. P&P) that we can’t really blame you for buying them by the shedload!. The tracklisting is:

Ambidextrous {flux}

Ghost

Get Me Out Of Her

Punishment (hand-held version)

888 – Hostile Implant mix

888 – iRg mix

888 – Exitboy mix

If you want your copy SEND MONEY NOW!!

— T-shirts —

We still have them…you still want them! Featuring a silver logo on the front, “TOUGH ON GOTH – TOUGH ON THE CAUSES OF GOTH” slogan on the back, these tasteful items are available in extra-large and skinny-fit in regulation goes-with-anything black.

SEND MONEY NOW! We’ve sold half of these already! They’re a modest £8.50 including postage to anywhere in the UK (overseas orders, please mail us on chaosengine@cimmerii.demon.co.uk first), so send your cheques or postal orders (payable to THE CHAOS ENGINE) to the address at the end of this mail.

As promised, the UV-reactant T-shirts are underway, and will feature a vicious acieed-coloured logo on the front on a range of T-shirts – some of them REALLY skinny-fit, since we didn’t allow for the fact that our fanbase are getting increasingly svelte and require a snugger fit…

— photo archive @ http://www.chaosengine.com —

Due for assembly in the next couple of weeks, this will include dozens of unseen Chaos Engine photos of us live, in the studio, off-duty, on the piss and playing crazy golf (now you’re curious, aren’t you?!) – we’ll let you know when this atrocity exhibition can be viewed, and once up will be regularly updated.

If you have any photos that you’ve taken of us plaing live, we’d be very grateful if you could either e-mail them to us, or let us provide a link to the relevant section of your site – please drop us a line at chaosengine@cimmerii.demon.co.uk – the more the merrier!

— outro —

Dunno about you lot, but I’m really bloody excited about all this malarkey! Anyhow, stay tuned for further developments

GREETINGS one and all to a brief Newsflash to fill you in on all that’s whirring in The Chaos Engine’s darkly mysterious core…

— damage all-dayer —

Cheers and Wa-Hey! to all of you that made the effort to crawl out of bed and come & see us in Birmingham for this all-dayer – this was one of our most enjoyable live shows in quite some time. Traditional apologies for the (now almost mandatory) powercut during our set; this was for nothing less spectacular than my ever-trusty Strobo-Mic (TM) delivering me a not-so-friendly 240 volt electric shock that blew the fuses during ‘Nonconformer’… Still, I’m not dead, I can almost feel my fingers now, and it’ll make an interesting anecdote one day! Cheers also to those with the foresight to grab their copy of the…

— ONE BIGGER THAN GOD E.P.–

…which we released on 30/5/99 at the aforementioned event. This little gem features our favourite blasphemous mosh-anthem ‘888’, no less than 4 non-album tracks and 3 remixes of the title track for the ultra-modest sum of Five English Pounds. SEND MONEY NOW! Cheques to ‘The Chaos Engine’ please, or just make sure you don’t spend all your money on booze if you come and see us live – our mobile shop will be present and correct, and willing to serve… just don’t touch the precious things…

— OBSTINATE album —

Save for some editing to the ‘surprise’ end section and the final mix on one song (hopefully with some very special guest vocals), this mother is in the bag! Already receiving some rave reviews (check out http://www.irelands-web.ie/sorted/magazine/sordid/may99.htm#chaos for a sneak preview!)

The album will be released on the 19th July by Wasp Factory Recordings – our very own record label, no less! – and distributed by PHD in the UK and via Resurrection Records in Europe and America. Of COURSE there will be a launch party (or two!) and we’ll keep you informed of what’s going on and how you can get there!

— outro —

That’s your lot for this one, folks… we’re still adding more dates to our continual gigging onslaught (we have September & October pencilled in for nervous exhaustion), so don’t touch that dial!

Lee H. THE CHAOS ENGINE 07/06/99

Welcome, net-traveller, to the newsroom of THE CHAOS ENGINE. Here

you’ll find all the news that’s fit to print (and much that isn’t)

about our good selves, our recent manoeuvres and forthcoming

strategies for world domination…

——————————————————————————–

intro

Good day to you, viewers of Chaos TV, and welcome to another newsblast

from the fragrant shores of the Chaos Engine’s holiday village and

recording studio…yeah right. Well, while you were sleeping, we’ve

been working our tungsten-coated asses off making sure that before the

lights go out at the end of the year, The Chaos Engine is a household

name. So it’s either record that killer 2nd album and gig ’til we

collapse, or go out in a Waco-style fire and brimstone manner… only

time will tell which route we take. You’ll rest easier knowing we’re

spending more time and effort on the first option (but stocking up on

tinned food and shotguns just in case).

——————————————————————————–

obstinate

Yes, and verily the follow-up to ‘Difficult’ began to see the light of

day, and the people saw that it was Good… We’ve now finished a whole

batch of tracks, some of which are already going down a storm at yer

alternative flesh-pots and night-spots as we speak. Current favourites

seem to be ‘888 – one bigger than God’ and ‘Angel of Ruin’ either of

which may or may not be singles in the near future, depending on how

much money we can blag out of A.N.Other record label or Mr eeEVil High

Street NAZI bank. But I digress.

The album is now being co-produced by Jefferson, who so impressed us

with his remix of ‘Angel of Ruin’ recently (coming to an MP3 near you

soon) that we immediately press-ganged him into the legions ov Chaos

to show us the black alchemy that is sub-bass and big beats. Fret not!

The Chaos Engine aesthetic will not be lost by his assistance, merely

amplify and enhance the sonic damage… if you want to check out

Jefferson live, they are supporting the mighty Empirion at the Axiom

Centre, Cheltenham on April 2nd – call 01242 690243 for details.

When’s the album out? Buggered if I know. Hopefully late spring.

merchandise

T-shirts, my friends, and plenty of them! Now that the sun has shone

briefly on two consecutive days, it’s time to put away your 30-tog

cardigans, slap on the Ambre Solaire, and worship the sun! Or not.

We’ve got about half a dozen designs in mind, and they’ll be coming

out one after the other in limited-edition batches (read: we’ve got

enough money for one design – when we’ve sold those we’ll do some

more). Badges, too, are also beyond imminent and will be available in

a pocket-money priced pack of four at around the same time.

For those of you that STILL haven’t got hold of your copy of

‘Difficult’, our debut album – and I’m convinced you buggers are just

taping it for your mates now – it’s now available in two flavours. We

have a weeny handful of the original pressings left for the give-away

price of £7 (inc. P&P), and we’ve now retrieved the remaining copies

of version 2 (re-mastered, with extra track and CD-ROM video) from the

smouldering remains of StreetCulture records. These are available

directly from us for £9.50 (inc. P&P). Send your cheques (payable to

THE CHAOS ENGINE) to:

website

Yeah, yeah, we know, okay?! The usual Bill Gates funded traumas have

prevented us from being as efficient on the updates as we would have

liked, but we are making some serious shuffles to the site in the near

future – our main problem is that no-one seems willing to give us

enough web-space to host all the splendid gig photos we’ve amassed and

wonderful MP3-encoded songs we want to give you for free, which is a

bit arse. It will happen, oh yes. And there will be much rejoicing and

waving of flags. But not quite yet….

This is a bit of an odd one, since if you receive this, you’ll be on

the list already… however, you can go to http://www.onelist.com to

check your details, or send your friends and colleagues to

to subscribe to the list.

Whatsmore, there’s now a Chaos Engine newsgroup for you to have a

natter on, which you can subscribe to at

– we’re going to run this for a two month trial period and see how it

shapes up and see if it’s any use at all, or just an excuse for you to

trade insults and inside leg measurements with your nearest & dearest.

It’s your playground so play nice or we’ll go home and take our ball

with us…

outro

So that’s what we’ve been doing while everyone else was waiting for

the clocks to go forward (well, not everyone, but you know what I

mean). I’ve got a feeling in my special boy’s bits that this year is

gonna be pretty intense and groovy for The Chaos Engine, so stick

around for the ride, folks!

Lee H. THE CHAOS ENGINE 15/3/99

Firstly, apologies for not keeping our new year’s resolution to keep

the website up to date; when we sat down and worked out all of the new

treats and features that we wanted to add, there simply wasn’t room on

our old server, so we’re now planning to move www.chaosengine.com to

new spacious premesis. You’ll still be able to get here through the

same URL, and we’ll inform all of you on the e-mailing list when we’ve

completed the renovations so you can come and bask in its magnificence!

The new improved website will include over 20 full Chaos Engine tracks

in glorious CD-quality MP3 format, including new songs, remixes, live

bootlegs and radio sessions, and dozens more photos from our scrapbook

of the band playing live, playing crazy golf and playing who can drink

the most tequila. We’re planning to update the news every couple of

weeks and keep e-mail subscribers posted just as regularly, the gossip

section will be new, larger and more salacious, the gig diary will

link to reviews where possible, and we’re working on a Chaos Engine

newsgroup for you addicts to discuss all matters Chaotic. The future’s

so bright, I’ve got to wear a balaclava…

DIFFICULT v2

We have now managed to retrieve copies of the remastered version of

‘DIFFICULT’, our debut album from the unfortunate wreckage of

StreetCulture records. For those of you new to the Chaos Engine, this

second version is remastered to perfection and contains the extra

track ‘Oedipus’, CD-ROM video for the song ‘Criminal’, and lovely

shiny new artwork, as well as all the live favourites like ‘Purge’ and

‘Industry Standard Beauty’. You can get one of these classy items for

a mere £10 (inc. P&P) directly from us at-

Please make all cheques payable to THE CHAOS ENGINE and in ENGLISH

CHRISTMAS SHOW & E.P.

Well, what a hum-dinger this turned out to be! With guest appearances

from Rog from LeechWoman drumming junk-metal and angle-grinding for

us, G Skinflower providing some exquisite acoustic melancholia, the

return of old bassist Rich Devine and the unveiling of our new bassist

Kelly, this was as near perfect an end to the year as we could have

wished for – Three Cheers to everyone who came and made it so

stunning, and also thanks to Sneaky Bat Machine for providing suitably

whacked-out support. Look out for photos and downloadable tracks soon…

As anticipated, we entirely sold out of the ‘INDUSTRIAL MIGHT & MAGIC’

e.p. on the night of the gig. We’re not planning to re-press this one,

so you’ll just have to sit tight until the album’s finished… oh

okay, there’ll be bits on the website soon. Jeez, we’re too kind.

NEW MERCHANDISE

Due to popular demand, we will have some new CHAOS ENGINE T-shirts and

badges for you hungry fans of Chaos to purchase in the imminent

future. There should be two designs of T-shirt to keep you warm, a

nice big traditional XXL black thing for people who appreciate the

finer things in life, and also a skinny-fit thing for foxy babes or

androgynous boys who don’t drink enough beer.

We’ll also be doing a 4-badge set to enhance or hold together any item

of existing apparel you may own. These will feature the band logo and

a selection of saucy slogans – including the legendary ‘TIME FOR

CHIPS’ mis-quote. One day you’ll understand, and when you do, fell

free to let us in on the joke… All these goodies should be up for

grabs by the end of March at pocket-money prices.

REMIXES

As a result of the ‘INDUSTRIAL MIGHT & MAGIC’ E.P. there really has

been a frenzy of remixing going on! Both LeechWoman and Squid provided

splendid re-workings of our tracks for the E.P. and The LeechWoman

remix of ‘Purge’ is now to be featured on their forthcoming remix E.P.

itself! The Squid mix will be on the website for your delictation

presently… Still to come are remixes by Sneaky Bat Machine,

Jefferson and Inkubus Sukkubus. Ooh, I can feel another E.P. coming on!

In return, The Chaos Engine have just completed 2 remixes for Sneaky

Bat Machine, are reworking a Jefferson track and have finished

producing the first Skinflowers E.P. which is due for release in March.

LIVE SHOWS

We’ve just got a couple of shows confirmed at the moment, though we

are in the process of sorting out something wonderful in the shape of

a tour with London noise merchants G.N.A. as we speak – stay tuned for

details. The ones we do know about are:

February 11

THE ATTIC, Cheltenham

February 15

THE BORDERLINE, London

March 25

THE CORPORATION, Sheffield

OBSTINATE

The new album is still under construction, but is sounding absolutely

magnificent. Those of you who have caught the recent live shows will

have already heard the new songs ‘888 (One Bigger Than God)’, ‘Angel

of Ruin’ and ‘Employee of the Year’, all potential singles! We now

have more than half of it completed and have a top-notch producer

on-board to help make it as huge as the noises in our head. We’re

talking animatedly with record companies and getting quite excited by

the whole she-bang. One way or another, you have the Chaos Engine’s

personal assurance it will be out before the end of the millennium…!

END

Cheers for tuning in, folks. Drop back regularly and join the Chaos as

the whole thing goes ballistic! we’re just about getting into our

stride…

——————————————————————————–

——————————————————————————–

A warm welcome to all you followers of Chaos, old and new. Apologies for not updating this website as often as we’d like to, but as those of you on the e-mailing list will be aware, we have been going through some pretty major overhauls to the fine mechanism of The Chaos Engine while finishing our latest bout of gigging. You can read all the grisly details in the Gigography, but suffice to say that we had more fun at the Symphony of Shadows with tequila and sellotape than we were rightfully entitled to…

——————————————————————————–

The hottest, and indeed saddest news is that Rich Devine of the Bass Distortions has now effectively left the band in pursuit of much more sensible and financially rewarding employment. Rich is off to do frightfully clever 3D computery stuff instead of getting involved in the insane lottery that is Rock N Roll (or equivalent). Although no longer a fully paid-up member of The Chaos Engine, you can expect to see his name infecting various projects for the forseeable future, and he is currently being bullied into spending his spare time putting together a video for ‘TAO’ which you should be able to preview on the web early next year. Good luck we say to him – and if he thinks he’s getting away that easily, he’s got another think coming…!

This however does by no means mean the end of The Chaos Engine, no siree Bob! We’re knee-deep in new songs in various states of completion which will eventually make up the second album (which is, more appropriately than ever, still provisionally called ‘Obstinate’), and we’re taking a little time to step off the gig circuit and do a spot of serious recording. We fear that the end of year deadline may have been a tad ambitious, but worry not!

——————————————————————————–

What we CAN definitely tell you is that we will be unveiling our new line-up at our now obligatory

CHAOS ENGINE CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA

which this year is to be held at the

AXIOM CENTRE,

Cheltenham on 22nd December 1998. See ‘Gigs’ section for full details.

The special news is that due to frighteneing public demand, we will be releasing a VERY LIMITED CD EP to coincide with this year’s Christmas Extravaganza. The pressing will include two brand-new cuts from ‘OBSTINATE’, the live favourite ‘Last Supper’ and three celebrity remixes that are tippety-top secret. This ultra-rare item will cost a ridiculously modest £5, will be limited to a pressing of just 50 and will be available exclusively at the gig. Please note, demand is likely to be high, and we’ll be selling them on a first come first served basis. We’re not able to take reservations, so SEND NO MONEY NOW. In the unlikely event of any being left after Christmas, we will be issuing a special hotline number – stay tuned!

——————————————————————————–

Other solemn promises and premature new Year Resolutions from us include our dedication to keep this site updated MUCH more regularly in the future, and hang on to your seats as www.chaosengine.com gets a major makeover in the coming months. We should also have some photos from our recent manoeuvres up very soon indeedy if they’re not already waiting for you, and the gigography section gives you our full journal of gigs (including set lists) – time to find out if we were having as much fun as you were!!

——————————————————————————–

ACHTUNG! You big hairy followers of Chaos! Well another month older, and we’re still not as famous as the Spice Girls…but at least Ginger Chaos is still very much in the band thanx for asking, and Rich has now made a full recovery! Well our rest to recover from the last bout of furious gigging isn’t going to happen, as we continue to get invited to ply our trade in a variety of exotic locations (and Leicester…!) over the festy season. We could lie and say that we were going to play Phoenix…but we’ll leave that sort of talk in the capable hands of the rumour mill! Meanwhile, here are a few dates for your diary:

——————————————————————————–

Saturday 11th JULY

THE JOINERS ARMS, Southampton

Friday 17th JULY

GUILDHALL ARTS CENTRE, Gloucester

Saturday 25th JULY

THE MERCAT, Birmingham

Sunday 26th JULY

THE ATTIC, Cheltenham

Saturday 8th AUGUST

ABBEY PARK FESTIVAL, Leicester

——————————————————————————–

Check the gigs section of the site for full details and line-ups for each evening, although a big HOORAY! For Leechwoman, who we are sharing a stage with for three of the above dates.

What other news? Well, whilst you’re here, you could check out the new photos of our antics at Whitby this year, or read the reports of our last frenzy of gigging (a big hello to those of you whose eardrums we battered at Rock City and Slimelight, and a big boo to those who forgot to come to the Attic!), or browse the lyrics to the songs that are under construction for the new album, or visit the rumour mill for the latest tasty titbits of gossip…Chaos never sleeps…

We are also planning to fit in another web party, hopefully in July, to premiere another couple of tracks from our new album and our first web video. We’ll also get the whole band on-line to chat live with you lovely folks like we almost managed to last time! Make sure you join the e-mailing list to ensure that you get details of the party date, time and dress code!

——————————————————————————–

Now before we leave, a couple of quick polite requests. Firstly, if you’re a regular visitor to www.chaosengine.com, surf over to our interact section and pop your name on the e-mailing list. As you’d expect it’s totally free, and we’ll let you know whenever we update the site or we’re planning to play live or run a web-event. You will need to confirm your registration afterwards, but then you can put yourself on and off the list whenever you like. We should be sending e-mail every couple of weeks, and we’d hate you to miss out!

Secondly, if you’re signing the guestbook, don’t be shy! Leave a message for the whole world to see. If you want to send a private message, you can email either the whole band or any of us individually. The guestbook is looking like an FBI top-secret document with all the private entries! GREETNGS, to one and all…welcome to THE CHAOS ENGINE SURF SHACK! Well now, we’ve got some hot gossip for you this month, tied in with a smattering of apologies…

Firstly, if you turned up here on 15/5/98 expecting all manner of web-related antics, videos, chats and the like, and feel like your party was pooped, we’re sorry! As you may or may not know from other news & gossip, Rich has broken his thumb and his recovery has been a little sluggish – he was the one who was going to be doing the first CHAOS NET TV video, and with his right hand out of action, everything ground to a halt. It also meant that Lee & Huw had to do some panic programming and rehearsing to replace Rich at the VAMPS & TRAMPS gig in Whitby and at Sam Fay’s in Nottingham at the beginning of May – A HUGE Chaos Thanxx to Erin for bass duties at short notice! Hope the Devine fanclub weren’t too upset by this…

Rich is now well on the road to recovery, and we’re planning to reschedule the web events for sometime in the summer. His speedy return has allowed us to get our galvanised steel asses back on the gig circuit with some fabbo live dates:-

——————————————————————————–

3rd JUNE at JB’s, Dudley, with CHRISTIAN DEATH

7th JUNE at ROCK CITY, Nottingham with CHRISTIAN DEATH, LEECHWOMAN, and more!

9th JUNE at THE ATTIC, Cheltenham with RADIATOR

12th JUNE at SLIMELIGHT, London with SENSORIUM and SURFACE 23

24th JULY at THE MERCAT, Birmingham with LEECHWOMAN

See our gig list for the full line-up of each date & ticket details.

——————————————————————————–

The bad news is that our previously advertised gig on the 20th JUNE at the Dome in Morecambe (the Zeitgeist ’98 Festival) with The Damned has been cancelled. Boo! There is a possibility that this gig will be rescheduled later in the year; we’ll keep you informed on the current state of play as soon as the dust settles ! Also, the gig supporting Transister at The Attic has been postponed until later in the year – apparently they’ve been getting lots of airplay in Europe (lucky gits!) and have gone off to do lots of festy dates elsewhere. It should still be taking place, but a September date is now more likely. Hopefully, we should also be on the bill for the Abbey Park festival in Leicester in August, and some more fun-sized dates in October, and we’re trying to sort something out for gigs on other bits of the globe. Chaos never sleeps, just counts it’s eyelids from the inside.

——————————————————————————–

Despite our accident-prone nature this month, work on the new album continues, and it’s starting to sound pretty damn fine if I do say so myself… new tracks include “Ascention” which is somewhere between an industrial Arab Strap and a very cross Therapy?, “Ambidextrous FluxPuppy”, which is a full on Prodigy style mosh anthem about shagging your best mate’s girlfriend and your best mate ! “Angel Of Ruin” which is utterly schizophrenic occupying that difficult middle-ground between tribal techno and fifteenth century chamber music, and “Employee Of The Year”, which may or may not be a Nine Inch Nails style song about wanting to kill your boss.

——————————————————————————–

You lovely devoted fans ov Chaos should be able to hear new sneek previews at the beginning of June (with or without bass!). Also, anyone on the FREQUENT FLYER list will be pleased to hear that we should have our second collectors-only tape going out in June too, to include a brand new Chaos remix of TAO and an acoustic version of WHEN MIRACLES GO WRONG (featuring the boundless talents of Gary Skinflower). For those of you missing out on this tip-top service, point your cursor in the direction of our merchandise page at top-browser-speed!

Parental Advisory, The Chaos Engine’s happy studio is also about to be stripped to the gills and rebuilt in a new secret location, after which we will be working with a whole bunch of new bands, applying the skilled hand of Chaos on production duties for Skinflowers (including some possible co-writing), Aviator Dro (an experimental and frankly terrifying futurist performance-art troupe), and Hostile Implant (Grr-303-obsessed-Techno with spiky guitars).

——————————————————————————–

——————————————————————————–

A big Chaos greeting to the all new chaosengine.com, the virtual HQ of THE CHAOS ENGINE, whether you be new visitors who were spammed into submission or old friends come to check out our home (page) improvements.

So, what do you think? Checked out the sneak previews of the album yet? Been to the photo gallery? Left a message in our guest book? Felt queasy at the sight of one band member morphing into another? Chatted to us live on-line? Found out what Huw’s favourite Opal Fruit is? (The word “Starburst” is hereby banned from this website!) So much to see and do!

Well, as far as you intrepid surfers are concerned, this website is our most exciting news, lovingly crafted by our good selves in the true spirit of independence (and all that). A veritable Encyclopaedia Chaotica, it contains just about every nugget of info you could ever wish for, from a full discography, to a list of every gig ever played, news, reviews, and tomfoolery (anything you feel is missing, just drop us a line…)

So! To the news… well, the work on the next album is well underway (provisionally titled “Obstinate”), with most of the work now taking place at the all-singing-all-dancing-all-digital Parental Advisory studios hidden away somewhere in the floral bowels of Gloucestershire. You can download the first fruits of our labour right here, right now! (Courtesy of unKle HiRez and his magic MPEGs). It’s closer to the live mayhem than “Difficult”, slightly more diverse, but still utterly, brilliantly Chaos-Enginey. Vicious rumours about the use of acoustic guitars, or pure handbag-techno tracks cannot yet be denied in full…

If you shoot over to our EVENTS page (…not yet! Jeez, you’ve got a short attention span!), you’ll be able to enter a Chaos Engine Competition! You could win a whole batch of splendid goodies from our bankruptingly-generous selves including signed original pressings of “Difficult”, T-shirts and deleted EP’s, and also a LIFE-SIZE HUW DOLL WITH REALISTIC GRUNTING SOUND! (I resent that!! – Huw) Madness! Normally, this will be the place to find out where we’ve been reviewed or interviewed, but we’re in such high spirits, we thought we’d bombard you with generosity!

Are we out gigging again? You bet yer sweet booty we are! No full tours at present, but an outbreak of Hit & Run gigging over easter See the GIGS section for full confirmed details. First up is a homecoming gig in Cheltenham at the Axiom Centre on APRIL 3rd – we can guarantee that we’ll be road testing brand new new material on the guinea pig style audience at this one, and it’s our first headline gig since Santa dropped his sack down your flue! Even my mum’s coming, so your excuse better be damn good…!

Next up in the live frenzy, we have the allegedly controversial VAMPS & TRAMPS gig at Whitby’s Metropole on May 2nd. Apparently, due to some arcane pagan treaty of 1668, this means we have picked sides on some huge intergalactic Goth War, and will be forbidden from playing at some other events this year. We’ll make this clear, once and for all. WE DO NOT DO GOTH POLITICS…JeZus, we’re barely GOTH, and we don’t have time for this squabbling – If the responsible parties want a return to the halcyon days, then SORT IT OUT! I didn’t ever think The Chaos Engine would be the ones saying “Let’s all be friends!”… Ho-hum, we’ve made our coffin, now we’ve got to lie in it (…only to get back out when we hear scrapey EE!EE!EE! violin music, no doubt…!)

Good news of any of you who are new to Chaos, or just plain sloth like in that most creative of pastimes – SHOPPING – You can now get our album from the good and darkly folks of NIGHTBREED RECORDINGS (web dwellers don’t even need to leave the safety of their virtual cocoons – just surf over to http://www.nightbrd.demon.co.uk or nightbreed@demon.co.uk) This should help those of you who complained you couldn’t use your flexible friend at our gigs (!); well, now you can debit your way to Chaos! This should confuse the goth politicians still further…

We’re also about to start work on a new video project (probably for the song “Next In Line” from the new album). It’s directed by Little Steve, who, if any of you have been drinking ’round Cheltenham, will almost certainly know of (hell, you’ve probably copped off with him!). Those of you who saw the ChaosTV projections at our Christmas gig will have a rough idea what direction we’re heading in – if not, head over to our web links page!

News just breaking of The Chaos Engine providing music for an advert on local radio is too fresh even for inclusion on The Rumour Mill! You’ll just have to surf back again soon! This was never going to be the standard path to rock & roll fortune…

Okay, that’s all that’s hot & happening in the land of Chaos – Y’all come back soon now, y’hear?!

Adios,

Lee H. THE CHAOS ENGINE 24/3/98
